Thank you for allowing me to give back to a place and group that was such a vital part of my recovery. RCOSA will always have a special place in my heart. See you soon Brother.
Jason S.; RCOSA Alum upon completing his 13 week tenure as chair of RCOSA’s Thursday Night Meeting.
Steve,
Thank you, thank you, thank you for all of the support, hope and encouragement that you and RCOSA gave my husband and I during this difficult time. I hope this donation will help you continue your amazing work.
Wife of recent RCOSA Alum
My name is Barbara and I am the mother of an adult son struggling with the disease of alcoholism. Thankfully my son is in a residential treatment program where he is receiving the care and support he needs to recover. As I have come to understand the disease, it is extremely difficult to engage in a successful recovery without the understanding and
I saw my son this Thanksgiving. He was sober for the first time in ten years and attributes it to being able to live in a safe, supportive residence for the last four months as he became increasingly stronger and resolute to get well. This is the first sign of concrete hope I have had for my son’s future in a very long time.
Programs offering residential alcohol treatment with which I am familiar (three in Chicago and two in California) are run by professional personnel whose commitment to the work of recovery is a life-long passion. This includes ensuring the residents are responsible members of a neighborhood and community in which they live. They are expected to treat neighbors and their environment with respect.
One such program (RCOSA) is directed by Steve Greenberg. When I visited the program in Chicago- the apartments were clean, the residents polite and either working, volunteering, or going to school in the community. Their days included AA meetings, shopping for and preparing meals, gathering for discussions and going on group outings.
Mr. Greenberg’s reputation is sound: he came highly recommended by both health care institutions and individual therapists.
Barbara Cleveland
I’m writing in support of Steve Greenberg and RCOSA. I am a grateful alumni and former resident of Recovering Communities of Step Ahead (RCOSA), directed by Mr. Greenberg. I say “grateful” because I don’t think it’s hyperbole to say that RCOSA saved my life.
In early 2010 I left the third treatment I attended within eight years for my drug addiction. Later in the year I was caught up in a relapse yet again. I moved in to ROCSA in July of 2010 and stayed there 11 months. RCOSA provided a protected environment of love and support. Though I worked full time the entire time I was there, I had the opportunity to work on myself and become a better person. Last month I reached a personal milestone of 22 months sober, something that I haven’t seen in 10 years. I will continue in this new way of life with a daily spiritual routine that grew out of the support I received at RCOSA.
I believe that my success in recovery started with acceptance that I am an addict and alcoholic. Early in my recovery I had not accepted that. I had a misunderstanding about addiction that many share (but that could be fatal for an addict). I thought addicts were those who panhandled on street corners and passed out in alleys. I learned that addicts were mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, coworkers, professionals, the young, the old, the wealthy, the poor and me. Because of the stigma of addiction it took me years to tell some people in my family about my problem and some don’t yet know.
RCOSA is located in residential neighborhood in Chicago and it seems to me that most neighbors don’t know of its existence. This is in accordance with the spirit of Twelve-step programs which stresses anonymity and humility. There was enough chaos and destruction in my active addiction. Recovery started working for me when I had the opportunity to stay in a structured community where I could work on myself with the support of professionals and a community of likeminded recovering people.

-Alex K.: Recent RCOSA Alum on his One year anniversary
STeve G. and RCOSA,
I was referred to you by Hazelden Chicago for my 23 y/o son. For two months you have always been available for us via phone and the one time we met at RCOSA- which by the way is a fantastic facility. My son has not even entered your program yet and may not depending on treatment recommendations in California, yet you have warmly welcomed us in to your RCOSA family and have spent hours on the phone with us counseling and guiding. For that, we are eternally grateful.
David M., Sr. grateful Father and member of AA
Steve,
As you know, I am impressed with RCOSA and the work you are doing. Please accept this small donation as an indication of my support as well as my appreciation for your generosity and sensitivity to my sons’ needs.
I have talked up RCOSA to a number of people in the mental health field as well as the staff at where I work.
Blessings to you and to RCOSA.
Barbara
I can’t tell you how respectful I am of what you have accomplished with RCOSA and what you are committed to continue. Bless you and RCOSA. I am such a fan of what you are doing and how I think my son would flourish in your program.
-Mother of Prospective Resident after her visit to RCOSA
Steve – Don’t know your personal life well enough to know if you are a father … but wanted to say Happy Father’s Day from all those who haven’t necessarily had great fathering, but to whom you’ve shown a nurturing, supportive, truth telling, realistic but encouraging face and way of life that EVERY child (grown or new) needs. Deep appreciation for you choosing to be one who makes a difference in the larger community in which we’re all family. Gratefully, Nathalie (truth-be-told.org)

Steve,
My name is Matt and I was invited by my dear friend Tim to
attend the fund raiser you held a couple of months ago. I just want to
say thank you for what you do and what you have done for Tim and what
you have done for countless others. You represent the beauty of the
human spirit. I was inspired and humbled by the courage the speakers
showed by standing up in front of a large group and sharing their
experiences. I am a firm believer that you do your most growing as a
person in the toughest of times and that there’s a gift to be found
through every life event and experience…it just takes an awareness to
find it. Certainly the role that you play in people’s lives enable
them to have that awareness. Anyway, just felt compelled to reach out
and say thank you and express my deepest sentiments for you. I wish you
a truly happy new year.

“Hi Steve-just wanted to let you know that things are continually improving with our son and we had a wonderful Christmas with him. we reflected back on Christmas day of last year when things were at their worst and we can’t believe this is the same young man we have with us today. we even took a little trip together recently and it was such a great time for both of us. He is looking forward to starting college classes again next week. He had an amazing first quarter-all A’s! Thank you for being such an integral part of his recovery. Steve, you are an amazing individual and we are most grateful to you.
Mother of a 23 year old who RCOSA helped this past year.
Hey Steve,
Wow, it has been a long time. I feel like I owe it to you, to at least find you and let you know how I’m doing, being that you have always been a very inspirational person in my life.
So where do I begin…
I can start by saying I am doing very well… I am living on North Miami Beach in an oceanfront condo and loving my life.
After quite a few moves back and forth from Chicago to Miami and a number of relationships and ups and downs and good times and bad, I find myself in Miami. I currently hold the title of Fitness Manager at one place and as Director of Affiliate Marketing for another.
I enjoy what I do, but I am always looking for ways to grow and reach out to more people. I believe proper guidance combined with optimal nutrition is the # 1 reason why I was able to break away from doing what everyone else always did growing up…
I am an advocate of eating raw organic vegan superfoods and I think that proper diet can and will beat any and all addiction. I am currently working on a program I’d like to share with you that is meant to help addicts recover but my area of expertise is the nutrition side. I think with my nutrition advice combined with expert counseling, from someone like yourself for example, could be a breakthrough in the entire rehabilitation process. I am very interested in writing a book with the combination and then executing a very well planned marketing campaign to promote it and sell millions of copies.
In my free time, I read and I read and absorb the knowledge and I eat such clean, pure foods that I never have room for negative things such as depression or anxiety or temptation…
My goal in my life is to brainstorm and develop 1,000 million dollar ideas and make all of them really happen. I very strongly believe it can be done. I want to say “Thank You” for leading me out of trouble and into a better way of living. You were always tough but fair and one thing I always remember about you is that you see things the way they are. You were able to challenge me because I always wanted you to respect me. I could always acknowledge the feeling that you cared…
Jesse J.
I came to RCOSA will nothing left – absolutely bankrupt in every aspect of my former life, and left RCOSA with the fundamentals of what is turning out to be a million dollar gift.
Miracles happen here!
Subject: Gratitude
Steve,
A jogger was nearing the end of a run. Sand dunes on the left blocked his view of the beach beyond. Crossing the dunes would require extra effort after a long, tiring workout. Instead, he could opt to remain on the flat road that veered off to the right. Although the scenery was less appealing, the easier route was enticing. Past experience had taught him to avoid pushing himself too hard. Yet he loved the sight of the ocean.
The jogger hesitated. An inner nudge urged him toward the dunes, and he chose to respond to it. As the beach appeared, a spectacular sunset hovered above the crashing waves. Humility overwhelmed the runner when he realized that in his moment of hesitation, he had listened to a Power greater than himself, one who could see around blind corners.
Today I will pause at a crossroad and listen for my Higher Power’s voice.
Steve,
This morning as I read this reflection (for the second time) I was grateful for the comfort that it gave me. I am soldiering on in recent weeks/months. In all of it God is nudging me “over the dunes. I’m finding the strength I need…. As I prayed I thought of all of you (and others) and how we all are soldiering on…. We do this together.
a)lean economic times that could create doubt
b)health and deadly diseases that threaten to rob and kill
c)broken hearts and relationships that bring us to our knees
d)Dual diagnosis that require effort and diligence
Tsunamis, earthquakes,Haiti, Japan…
Indeed, the planet soldiers. Today I’m mindful that being a victim isn’t an option. It comforts me to know – and experience – that as I try to be my best I do not soldier alone. God has given me incredible pace partners. We run this road of happy destiny together.
March 22 marks two years for this Alcoholic. My favorite word in the AA literature is still “we.” As God gives me two years this morning, I’m so grateful that we travel together. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for being a we with me. I love the way you reference “the we” in meetings. It helps me so much.
Love you, Man
May God be praised! All my very best, C
After years of fear, worry, guilt, anger, dread, distance, dashed hopes and something very close to despair, my loved one told me in October that he wanted to go to RCOSA. He had heard good things about it from people who would know. And he really neeeded –and more importantly– wanted to make a new start. I had never heard of RCOSA, and immediately went on-line to find out more about it. As I read the testimonials, I frankly thought it sounded too good to be true. Mostly, I think I was just afraid to hope again. Well, I’m here to tell you today, it IS good and it IS true. RCOSA has helped in a way that no other program did (and through the years, I’ve become familiar with many!). While there is a long road ahead, my brother’s step toward RCOSA has been a turning point. Not only for him but for me and the rest of our family. RCOSA’s combination of the 12 steps with tough love, compassion, common sense and kindness helps bring about a healing process for those who are brave, open and committed enough to embrace it. I’m very impressed by all the people I’ve met at RCOSA. I’m thankful to the residents who are helping their new “brothers” recover. And, there is simply no way to fully express the admiration I have for Steve — who brings them all together and keeps the whole thing going. His sense of mission and zest for living are inspiring. All of us who have loved ones who suffer from this disease know how very painful it can be for all concerned. Steve and the people RCOSA have begun to show me how rewarding recovery can be. It’s one day at a time and today is a good day. I’m very grateful to all the people of RCOSA for their support. All the best to all of you today, in the new year and always… Peace! –Sister of an RCOSA Resident
How do you thank someone for saving your life? I know it sounds melodramatic, or extreme…But the truth is, that RCOSA saved my life. I recently celebrated a year of sobriety thanks to my family here, and will mark a year in residence in early December. I am a professional person with a pretty amazing background. I consider myself smart, well educated and successful. However I fell victim to the disease of Alcoholism. I am no different than any other person with an addiction, I need help, I can’t do this on my own. I am living proof of the miracle that is RCOSA! I want to tell you of the absolute joy my life has become since my affiliation with RCOSA. I’m a regular guy… with a regular problem… who was saved by an extraordinary man and his vision that is RCOSA!
We have a true family setting, where we watch out for each other, hold each other accountable, and recognize each others accomplishments. We have privacy without lonliness, responsibilty without oppression, and concern without annoyance.
The life skills I have gained here are too numerous to count and an invaluable set of tools I will need to continue this amazing sober life! I am certain the friendships I have made at RCOSA will endure along with my sobriety…for a lifetime!
You have many options when choosing a sober living community, however none can hold a candle to RCOSA. Because only RCOSA has Steve Greenberg as it’s Director! This past Thanksgiving I gave thanks for him and the true gift that is RCOSA! Thank you for reading my rambling testimonial, and I hope this can help you, at what may be a difficult time.
Sincerely,
John T
Dear Steve,
We are grateful to you for taking our son into your “family”. We hope that he continues to make progress and stays sober. We understand that this is a lifetime endeavor but we remain hopeful that he will one day be living independently and be comfortable with substance free living.
It has been a struggle for all of us. We are grateful to have you as a resource moving forward with this chapter of our lives. Please, never hesitate to call on us if you feel we could be doing something different or if you see something he needs that perhaps we are unaware of.
Have a blessed holiday season and again, many thanks.
Very truly yours.
The S Family
The most important aspects for a successful sober-living environment are accountability and care and respect for the individual. RCOSA ensured that I not only stayed sober, but that I was attending meetings, getting necessary counseling and working a 12-step program with a sponsor. Without this, my continued sobriety when I went back out on my own was precarious, at best. I learned to be accountable and respectful to and for my housemates, as well as my friends in the entire sober-living community. The RCOSA Director also showed me the care and respect I needed and deserved to feel welcome and comfortable while living there.
I only have positive things to say about my experience at Step Ahead. I have a deeply rooted belief today that Step Ahead has played a major role in the changes that have taken place in my life. Not only did Step Ahead provide a healthy living environment for everyone who lived there, but there existed a spirit of love and comaraderie within the community that I had not previously encountered.
When I arrived at Step Ahead I had some doubt about my ability to live a sober and productive life. My past was full of lost opportunities, broken promises, and mistakes. The mentoring and spiritual guidance of Steve Greenberg and other members of the Step Ahead community helped me to believe in myself and my ability to achieve my goals.
Step Ahead also provided the opportunity to attend A.A. meetings in the building on a regular basis. Since regular attendance at A.A. meetings is an integral part of living a clean and sober life, this aspect of living at Step Ahead is invaluable. There were many parties, barbeques, etc. at Step Ahead that helped me to learn how to socialize and have fun again.
I am extremely grateful for Step Ahead and I highly recommend it to anyone seeking to live a sober and happy life.
Sincerely,
Johnny B.
My name is Jeanette A.. My sobriety date is in March of 2000. When the time can for me to leave the recovering center I was at, I had nowhere to go and with (8) months of sobriety I was scared. Not wanting to go back where I came from and my credit was so bad. I had know hope on finding somewhere to live. Until someone who was residing at Step Ahead, told me about this place. Where all the residents are recovering people, I jumped at the chance and took his number called and got an interview to meet with Mr. Steve Greenberg. From that moment on my life has changed for the best. The meetings we had at step ahead helped me to grow Spiritually, Mentally and emotionally. Living there allowed me to live life on life terms. I will be forever grateful to Mr. Steve G and step ahead.
How cool it was to find out that the best Thursday night 6:30pm Step Meeting in Chicagos’ Finer Uptown District is located at 47.97011 by 87.655842!.
Thank you Mike S. and get better fast. we missed you!The Guys From Thursday Night RCOSA Group.
Steve G.
I miss you and have wonderful memories of you.
I am blessed. I am still continuing my education and working.
God is good all of the time.
There will always be a place in my heart for you and Step Ahead..

Dear Steve,
Thanks for everything. you are such a genuine person. RCOSA made a huge difference in my life. I will always remember RCOSA. Thank you! Take care. Peace.

Dear Steve,
My son is struggling with heroin addiction and needs to be in a recovery home. My brother-in-law heard someone praise your place at a recent AA meeting. In trying to find you on the internet I could only find this e-mail address and a PO Box address. We are in Northern Illinois and would like to speak with someone about Step Ahead.
Steve,
I continue to hear nothing but positive reports on your residence and generally impressed with the sobriety of the men who live or are alumni.
My sponsor also is strongly suggesting a sober “community” such as yours of which there seem to be few.
Steve:
Melinda and I are so very thankful for the community you have created and all you have accomplished at RCOSA. Thank you for helping Pat reach his first year of sobriety and obtain his long sought degree. Have a great trip. GTS
I wish words could convey how valuable RCOSA has been for my recovery and my happiness. The environment is one of family and community. From the moment I walked through the doors of RCOSA I immediately felt welcome, safe, comfortable and hopeful. Becoming a member of the RCOSA family has been the single most important decision I have made since embarking on this road to recovery. There are many options out there for the recovering person, however, in my view, RCOSA is head and shoulders above anything like it. I arrived seeking only sobriety, I have that and much more… a family and some of the best friends I could ever ask for. RCOSA has armed me with the tools I need to live an authentic, sober and peaceful life!
Sincerely, John T.
To Any and All RCOSA Supporters:
Given the economic climate these days, this testimonial may be a bit risky, but I do not care-because I feel my thoughts are pertinent regarding RCOSA.
I recently got to spend some time at one of RCOSAs’ Self-Help meetings and with some of the residents and I must say that if ever their was a worthy cause of our donated dollars-it is RCOSA.
I felt nothing but love, true fellowship, and got to experience a blend of recovery that I hope others can experience at RCOSA.
It was at that time that I decided to support this organization and I urge you all to do the same.
SIncerely,
Mike E.
Dear Steve,
Thank you for your service and all you do for alcoholics and addicts everywhere. You are doing important work and I am humbled by what you have achieved and the quiet determination you carry in your presence.
Best,
Roger
For anyone who has attended their fair share of drab, “crusty-old-timer” filled meetings bombarding the newcomer with “drunkalogues” and close-minded statements ordering newcomers what to do and how to live, I am here to report that RCOSAs’ Thursday night Step Meeting is truly a breath of fresh air.
I really enjoy the humility that is all around the room and RCOSA as a whole.
Great meeting., Great guys who all seem to be living and let living.
Peace to you all and keep up the great work.
Hi Steve,
All I can say is thank God for people like you! Thanks so much for meeting (my son) and me today. What an impressive home you have and what an impressive and caring person you are. Your heartfelt concern for the residents is truly evident, and (my son) couldn’t stop talking about our visit the entire 2 hour ride back to Rosecrance. I’ll call you Monday after talking with (my sons’ primary counselor). I feel like God puts certain people in our lives for a reason, and I truly felt that presence today at RCOSA. Thanks again , Bill
Steve,
Thanks for the wonderful dinner on Tuesday night at the Basil Leaf. It was great to be able to join the event even though we left early. I was most impressed with how dapper Scot W was looking all dressed up!
You might receive a call or email from somebody at my companyregarding this event as we have a company matching charitable gifts program. You have a very important organization and I’m happy that we can be supportive.
Happy Thanksgiving!
Lisa
Hello Everyone,
Days away from our 3rd Annual Fundraiser (being held this Tuesday November 17th at Basil Leaf Restaurant at 2467 N. Clark from 6-9pm), I am once again overwhelmed by all of the wonderful support being given to RCOSA. People from all over are giving of their time, energy, expertise, money, and their hearts to help us make this our most successful fundraiser.
I would like to take this time to thank everyone involved and to remind them all that they are making a HUGE difference in the lives of our current residents at RCOSA and those yet to come.
With much Gratitude,
Steve G.
Hi Steve,
It was indeed our pleasure to meet with you and see your organization. You are truly an asset to the recovery community and definitely a man worthy of support.
D. and I have talked and we are both confident that with your recovery community as a resource we will make a large impact and contribution to the recovery community.
Take good care my friend – we will be in touch.
Best regards – d
Hi Steve,
I do love a good fundraiser. I would very much like to donate to your great organization that continues to move mountains so that people can have a supportive community and an honest chance at recovery.
Peace and Love,
Stephanie
To Team RCOSA Members,
Before I even believed that a Sober Living Community may be an option for me, I ended up in ambulance rides in nearby St. Charles, I lost a job with a good career on more than one occasion. I ended up in hospitals with all sorts of detox drugs administered so I would not die from the withdrawal of alcohol. My life was nearing death and I personally TODAY am convinced that I was dead emotionally spiritually and physically. The bottoms I was having were near death and I have a purpose on earth today which I leraned by living amongst other recovering addicts.
Often I would end up in a 30 day treatment program. This never worked for me because I was barely even able to sleep right let alone even begin to know how to operate in a daily fashion that created respect and love for me as well as society and others. Until I finally reached a point where I had no other alternative and said “Ok” I will try a community, 6-12 month living scenario. I had no idea after I got there HOW IMPORTANT POST TREATMENT LIVING IS! I was able to really allow time to be responsible to a group of loving people and live within a parameter that I could not set right before I got there due to all the emotions that take place after a 30 day program, which should not be done without a sober living Community. Especially RCOSA.
In Conclusion:
When I was in treatment a truly spiritual and loving man by the name of Steve G. came to visit me in right near the end of my stay. I had forty dollars and nowhere to go. Steve said, WE can help you and will give you a chance to get back up and get your life into the hands of AA, god and the WE part of the program. Right there I knew I was going to be OK and that the second enormous weight came off my shoulders and that this was the right thing to do. Since then, I have had my trials and tribulations due to my own making but today there are times I sit in my brand new home with my successful career back and all the realities of living a life sober evident in my life, I wish I could go back and stay there because regardless what anyone says it’s the safest place for any addict willing to recover from a hopeless state of mind and body which I call addiction.
Sincerely,
Adam Y.
Steve G and RCOSA,_I cannot adequately express my gratitude for Step Ahead and you personally for saving my life. I was on a downward path of destruction and pain that began to reverse the moment I moved into Step Ahead. When I moved into Step Ahead I had nothing. I was unemployed, going through a divorce, wasn’t allowed to see my son, and had destroyed every relationship in my life. I had lost all respect for myself and any hope for a future. All of that changed in my time living at Step Ahead. In my 11 months of living at Step Ahead, my life changed 180 degrees I found a new life and a new freedom in living a sober life. The community of Step Ahead and the support and dignity that I regained in my time there, gave me a second chance at life that I am truly grateful for. While I was there, I became employed, earned back visitation with my son, and was able to rebuild the relationships that I had lost due to my disease. It has now been a year since I have moved out of Step Ahead and I can say that my life continues to get better everyday. I am grateful to still be a member of the Step Ahead community as an alumni and it is great to have another family that I can rely on to help me through this journey that I am on. My life is better now than I could ever imagined it could be when I walked in the doors of Step Ahead a broken man nearly two years ago. I can’t thank you enough for the love and support in showing that you cared about me when I couldn’t even care for myself. Anything I can do to continue the miracle that is Step Ahead, let me know and I will be there in a heartbeat. Thanks again.
Tim H
You wanna sammich or don’t you?” the jailer asked.
With all the turmoil and uncertainty I have faced in the past few years, being thrown in jail was not the answer I was looking for after 10 months of hard work in my sobriety. An old warrant for driving with expired license plates seemed small, but jail was frightening none the less.
However, living at Step Ahead taught me how to be disciplined in doing the right thing, relying on the faith of the AA program and the fellowship, facing my fears head on, gave me the courage and knowledge to overcome the situation. Steve Greenberg assured me when I first met him that working hard at sobriety, going to meetings, working the 12 Steps with a sponsor, living an honest life at Step Ahead, I would regain my dignity. My life.
I lost a wonderful career and respect of people that love me because of my drinking addiction. Now, I found a wonderful life and a rewarding new career because of Step Ahead and I am moving forward. Without the principles Step Ahead offers in recovery, I am certain I would be wallowing in a brutal world of alcoholism. It’s time for me to pass it on to others that simply ask for help and make a life changing commitment.

DUe to the respect I have for AA and for RCOSA, I have chosen to remain anonymous here during this jot.
I attended RCOSAs’ AA meeting last Thursday night and I was overwhelmed with gratitude: for the fellowship, for seeing some of the “old timers” continue to keep coming back, for seeing the eyes of the newcomers who are beginning their journey, for experiencing the honest and sincere sharing that binds us in our common mission, and to be a part of, to steal one from the director Steve G., “The We”.
That was truly a powerful evening and meeting and I wish everyone who is on this path could have experienced it.
God bless AA and RCOSA.
Humbly submitted.
AA Member and RCOSA Friend For Life
Hi Steve
Jason called me this morning and told me to check out the Community Dinner site on RCOSA. The first thing I said was ” Oh my God No!” I have this thing about having my picture taken.
Anyway I never looked at it as a Community Dinner but just a bunch of special people sharing something they may not get too often and this is a “Home cooked ” meal. Denice and I were so happy that we could do this and I have to tell you that I might have looked serious cuz that’s how I am while in the kitchen but I loved every minute of it.
Now for the serious part of this…..I know it’s the person that must work the program but without Step Ahead I don’t know if it would have happened. Lord knows Jason had tried other things and after a bit he was right back out there. I love you and all the guys that shared with our dinner and I love and am so proud of my Grandson. This is the longest he’s been clean since he was about 16yrs old or so. Everytime I look at the calendar I can’t believe that on the 15th of this month he will have 4 months of Sobriety. To my Denice and myself…..it’s a miracle. And it’s Jason and the help of AA and Step Ahead that brought him to where he is.
I pray for you all every day and especially for my Jason.
One plus that I now have with Jason is the Communication. He can talk to me about AA and he knows I’m the only one in our family that knows where he’s coming from. This is because I’m a grateful member of Al-Anon since 1989. I never miss a meeting because like you guys, this is what I need.
With love and Gratitude in our program
Joanie/Nonnie
To Steve G. and To RCOSA,
I wanted to thank you for meeting with me the other day for my interview. Though I am not yet prepared to make this move, I wanted to thank you for making me feel at home and comfortable. I was impressed with the place, how neat, clean, and nice it was. I look forward to moving in to your recovering community when the time is right.
Keep helping us recovering addicts.
God bless you.
David W.
Steve G. and RCOSA,
I am grateful in your consistent will to never give up on me and my struggles. Each day I saturate myself with as much as I can that you provided me with as in tools and just simple motivational discussions that the life of sobriety is BY FAR better than the life of alcoholism
To Steve G. and everyone at RCOSA,
My experience at RCOSA in Chicago’s Beautiful Uptown District was excellent. I miss the fellowship, the solid recovery, and the growth-oriented groups.
I hope that your efforts to expand your services to help more recovering alcoholics and addicts like myself is successful because it is very much needed.
God bless you and the mission.
Peace.
Ken
Hello Viewers,
During these tough economic times it may be difficult to consider giving of ourselves. If anyone out there is able and willing to make a donation, I strongly recommend giving to RCOSA. It is a wonderful program and there is absolutely no doubt in my mind that they help recovering people in ways that no one else I am aware of does. The love, care, concern, and support that I have seen every time I have visited RCOSA, whether for a meeting or for yoga is awesome. Residents really do really get better. I can see it.
I have given and will do so again very soon.
Keep up the great work RCOSA.
John (AA)
Steve G.
You are the man.
Steve and I have been close friends since we were kids. We went to grade school and high school together. He is like a brother to me. He has been keeping me advised about his alcoholic brother each step of the way. In fact, Steve called me yesterday right after meeting with you to tell me how impressed he is with RCOSA in general and you in particular. He was more excited after he met you yesterday than he’s been in a long, long time. I hope his brother takes advantage of this golden opportunity. He is a caring guy with a warm heart. Thanks, Steve G. for making this happen.
Jeff
Hi Steve,
Great to hear your voice today.
As I told you when we spoke today, you were instrumental in helping me get my head in the right place regarding my daughters addiction. I am forever grateful for the time you spent with me. I can hardly imagine where our family would be if I had not made some major decisions a year ago.
On to the fight for kids with addictive parents…I am on a committee that is geared to looking at ways to improve the laws here in Florida on dependency matters.
I am hoping you can provide some statistical information on how long it takes for people to truly begin to recover – if they even want to recover, and what the rate of success and failure is in this situation.
I hope to prove with the information you provide me, that many do not make it and those that do, only make it for a short time. This scenario would lend itself to a child of an addicted parent being in and out of the system, which in turn creates another person with potential problems down the road.
Thanks in advance for helping me with this.
Big Hugs,
Susie
Hello Everyone,
As the excitement of our 2nd Annual Fundraiser, to be held on 12/9/08, continues to increase, create amazing energy, and draw all kinds of wonderful people together for the comon purpose of helping RCOSA, I felt it necessary to express some gratitude.
I am so very grateful to so many people who have contributed their time, energy, expertise, love, and light toward the fundraiser up until this moment in time (and I am sure they will continue right on up through 12/9/08).
I would like to recognize some of them right here and now. Without them , we would not be doing this great event for this great cause:
Millie, Scott W., Tim H., the Three Anonymous Donors who continue to offer HUGE support behind the scenes, all the current residents of RCOSA Chicago (Love you Guys), Sean of Basil Leaf, our awesome Chicago Board members Terry, Jeff, John, Mike, Scott, and Bill, all of the wonderful donors to our raffle and silent auctions, our RCOSA friends and family, and to He who presides over us all. God bless you and God bless us all!
See you soon!
Gratefully Submitted,
Steve G,
Steve,
My name is Matt. I was invited by my dear friend, Tim H. to attend the fund raiser you held a couple of weeks ago. I just want to say thank you for what you do and what you have done for Tim and what you have done for countless others. You represent the beauty of the human spirit. I was inspired and humbled by the courage the speakers showed by standing up in front of a large group and sharing their experiences. I am a firm believer that you do your most growing as a person in the toughest of times and that there’s a gift to be found through every life event and experience…it just takes an awareness to find it. Certainly the role that you play in people’s lives enable them to have that awareness. Anyway, just felt compelled to reach out and say thank you and express my deepest sentiments for you. I wish you a truly happy new year.
Matt
Below you will find a letter from my friend Scott regarding a fund raiser- Please consider attending this event as it’s a new recovery organization and can use all our support. We can huddle up and try to decide to go as a group (table of ten) & sit together – that would be loads of fun as always. I have been asked to be the event’s photographer so I am definitely in!
If you can’t make it ( for whatever reason) please consider purchasing a ticket anyway and donating it to someone less fortunate.
You can contact me for tickets in a couple of weeks- for now SAVE THE DATE!!
Thanks,
Joanne
I am a recovering alcoholic. I have been a sober member of AA since 10/1/03.
I am emailing you because I am fortunate to be a part of Step Ahead. Step Ahead is a non-profit organization that helps recovering alcoholics and addicts.
Next month, Step Ahead is having a fundraiser. I wanted the chance to extend an invitation to you. Attached is the invite that is going out to many friends, families, and fellow members of AA.
I wanted you to know that not only do I understand how addiction takes over someone’s life because I’ve lived it, I also understand what the fellowship is. For so long, I have wanted to give back to my community, and I finally feel that (for once) I am doing something important and that means so much to so many lives. You are welcomed to be a part of this and I would love to have you at our Fundraiser Dinner Event. Although I would love everyone to come, I understand that during this busy holiday season, not everyone can make it. Therefore, I’ve also attaching a donation card, in case you are unable to attend the fundraiser.
Also, if you are interested in learning more about Step Ahead, you can visit the website at: www.rcosa.org
My sincere thanks to all my family, friends, and supporters.
Sincerely,
Scott
I spent 28 month’s at Steve’s Fresh Start halfway house. This recovery program proceeded Step Ahead. I never was in Step Ahead, but was familiar with the great work that was carried on under a different name, and a slightly different model. My niece developed a heroin and crack cocaine problem at a very young age. There were no real long term facilities for her to go to, where she could get the long term support she needed. She was on the road to prison or death. I contacted Steve, and he took my niece in. Her stay at Step Ahead for a year was the healing presence she needed to get on with her life. She went form a high school drop out, to a senior at a well regarded University in Chicago. The loving support, humor, and guidance from Step Ahead were all instrumental in the miracle that saved my nieces life.

I Lived at the original Step Ahead in Rogers Park Chicago IL. I have been clean and sober since 9/4/2002 and Step Ahead was an instrumental part of my early recovery. Unlike most programs Step Ahead stresses the Steps & Traditions of AA and helped me use this “design for living” in my own day to day life. I have a very warm spot in my heart for Steve G. and the other people I met while I lived there. I could not stay sober alone and Step Ahead helped teach me that. This is a Great recovery home with a serious program that has helped many like myself and will continue to help many more as long as it is around.
Jeremy S.
So good to see you last Friday, your energy is incredible – your optimism, contagious – your mission, courageous.
Thank you for helping my brother with his recovery and giving him a chance at Step Ahead.
Sue
I am grateful to have had the opportunity to be one of the first members of the Step Ahead community in Chicago. Steven G. has been a big part of my recovery and he is also a good friend. And because of that I have been sober for eleven years. Six of those years were spent at Step Ahead.
Step Ahead provided me with the structure and safety that all newly recovering people need. I was able to grow into my sobriety because of the environment Step Ahead provided. I was able to witness first hand how this new design for living without substances is supposed to work.
There were several meetings per week in the building that enabled me to build a network of people who are still in my life today. I learned how to share myself with others newer than myself and help them learn how to live a happy, sober life.
I highly recommend and support Steve in all his efforts to help others recover. He has a generous heart and does something to help everyone he knows.
If I can be of any help please let me know.

To Steve G. and RCOSA:
I can’t thank you and Step Ahead enough for being there for me and for going above and beyond the call to encourage and love me through my many processes which have taken place in my life since you first walked into that rehab unit. You never left me yet kept the necessary distance that was to be expected.
I have never met anyone nor any organization with the heart that you and Step Ahead have for helping the next alcoholic.
As I am on day 6 and my sleeping habits are tweaked, I feel a million miles better than I did. This is a “WE” thing. I look forward to being a close part of all meetings and will have a more defined answer as to what I am going to do. I would assume that I will be coming to RCOSA.
Have a great day!

Hi Steve-Thanks for taking the time to meet with me today. I look forward to our continuing discussions on alternative ways to expand your inspirational leadership for those of us with this dreaded disease of addiction. Let’s plan on meeting again later next week, Bill
I guess as I become more aware of my surroundings I really see your passion and excellent skills in working with new comers. You are truly above superior at what you do and I admire all your commitment to this non Profit.
I have a true belief that you are right around the corner for more success and that the signal is about to change for even more positive things with RCOSA.
Thank you for all that you do because it encompasses so much.

Steve G and RCOSA,
I cannot express my gratitude for Step Ahead and you personally for saving my life. I was on a downward path of destruction and pain that began to reverse the moment I moved into Step Ahead. I have been living at Step Ahead for nearly 5 months and the changes in my attitude toward life has been 180 degrees. I have hope again, and with the support of the community of Step Ahead and my higher power, I truly believe today that everything will be okay if I use the tools that I am practicing while learning to live a sober life while at Step Ahead. I can’t thank you enough for the love and support in showing that you cared about me when I couldn’t even care for myself. Anything I can do to continue the miracle that is Step Ahead, let me know and I will be there in a heartbeat. Thanks again.

I would like to give a shout out to the great guys currently living at Step Ahead, and remind them that I am grateful for their teaching to me a so much about living life on life’s terms on a daily basis: something we commonly refer to as acceptance.
God bless you guys. God Bless Us All!!!

I heard a rumor that Step Ahead really has a great recovering community. well, I can say now that it is no longer a rumor because I have witnessed first hand the growth of all of the guys at Step Ahead and it is truly inspiring both to myself and, I am sure, many other recovering people.
Keep up the hard work and peace, serenity, and sobriety will be yours for as long as you are willing to work for it.

Steve and RCOSA,
The first week at Step Ahead I look to become acclimated and get into the RCOSA schedule!. You have been such an important person in my life. I mean that. I am looking forward to coming. I don’t look at coming to Step Ahead as a consequence but rather a privilege.
Just a wish for all of our friends, supporters, family, alumni, and current residents:
May this Holiday Season bring each of you joy, peace, serenity, and the comfort of knowing that He can do for us what we cannot do for ourselves-if we let Him.
Have a Happy Holiday and I hope to see you at our Fundraiser on December 11th.

To Step Ahead,
I recently attended one of your in-house AA meetings and I must say that I was very impressed.
I especially was impressed by the beautiful condition of your recovering community and how warm and welcoming it made me feel.
The guys were great, the meeting was excellent, and I came away from the experience feeling more grateful and at peace than when I walked in.
I thank you for being there and for sharing in the very spirit which we know of as Recovery.
Sincerely,
CJ: Grateful Recovering Alcoholic

Steve,
Thanks for everything. You and the recovery house played an instrumental role in me being sober today and my 15 years of sobriety.
I don’t think I would have stayed sober without the community.
Continue the good works you do. Good works are everlasting, and money in the bank for the next life. The one we strive for.
Also thank you for being there for me in my down times. I really appreciate it.
Thanks for the love,
Dave.

Steve G.,
You are a good egg. I do think of you often and fondly-as a person that walks the walk, and talks the talk of Faith – Hope – Love.
Thank you for all of your help with our family and thank Step Ahead for being there for us, and for everyone else.
Hope you and the guys are well.
Sincerely,
Susan

Hi Steve-
Needless to say, we are delighted to watch our son’s progress over the past nine months and attribute much of it to Step Ahead and your personal involvement in his recovery. Thanks so much on both accounts!!

Hi Steve
Thank you so much for your business card. This little piece of “paper” gave me a chance to visit your web site and first thing I did was read the testimonials.
As a former ICU/ER RN I always like to know the outcome of a patient. Steve – I’m so touched by the testimonials and as a result – I just cried. I know I’m a softy but I will always believe in God’s power.
I never had an alcohol or drug problem- but other health issues like cancer. That’s why I always trust the Lord for the good outcome in life. Like you said yesterday it’s the WE what counts and helps so many. To know you’re not alone.
Thank you again for sharing all this with me.
Kind regards

Hello Step Ahead,
I have never lived at Step Ahead but have known a few who have. I simply wanted to tell you that your reputation as a high-quality, recovery-teaching, love-giving community has made its’ way throughout the recovering community of Chicago.
Keep up the excellent work and may God continue to bless you in your efforts.

I applaud the efforts of Step Ahead over the years. I know personally of many recovering alcoholics Step Ahead has housed, helped with learning the new design for living, and supported even after they moved on.
I am proud to be an Alumni of the Recovering Communities of Step Ahead and I hope many more can enjoy the quality environment, the love, support and solid recovery that Step Ahead has.
God bless

Guy,
I want to thank you for loving me when I was unable to love me or anybody else. I want to thank you for listening to me when I was fearful, discontent, bitter, and sad. I want to thank you for allowing me back to RCOSA. (In case you were unaware RCOSA is a non for profit 5013C located in Chicago’s finer uptown district nestled in the heart of Chicago’s urban upbeat society and accompanied by Lake Michigan within walking distance). I want to thank you for letting me back in with no money down and having the faith in me that I would pay up. I want to thank you for staying sober for sixteen years and sharing your friendship, your hope, your spirituality and recovery with a sick guy like me. I will and will expect continued friendship and will be a member of our sober circle. Without that I have nothing.
I love you Steve g….

Steve, you must be the greatest addition to my life, ever! You kindness and friendship always brings a smile and sometimes a tear (tears of joy).
You are so special to us, and so many others. What you do for strangers, is amazing, and look forward to being a part of the RCOSA Empire you will build here in Wimberley! I can’t wait!

Steve,
Your statistics are a great fund-raising tool. You have made a powerful point, particularly when one looks at the annual cost of homelessness and incarceration. Keep up the good work. This planet needs more people like you.

Steve,
Thank you for the note. It has been a long 7 days, but your presence last
Wednesday was a gift from God. On Thursday morning, my brother’s ex-wife called to tell me that he wanted to check-in to a facility and detox.
Since then, I have gone through getting him into facility, having him sent
to St. David’s hospital because his enzyme & amonia levels getting crazy, getting him out of the hospital, and trying to get him into some sort of rehab. The story continues, but you see this all the time and know the ups and downs.
The time spent on Wednesday with you gave me enough insight to handle something that I have had virtually zero experience with. It also brought home what you were describing as the various methods used. I was committed to working with you last Wednesday, this experience has only strengthened my resolve as I have now lived it with a loved-one here in Austin.
God Bless and thank you!

This is one of those times I felt I should make a post on here: to anyone who may read these, and to all of the people have yet to receive the goodness that is sobriety, recovery, and Step Ahead.
I am so very proud of our residents in Chicago for hanging in there with their recovery. Life on life’s terms can be a handful on some days, yet these wonderful men are staying on the path, facing their fears, insecurities, frustrations, and facing them with courage, grace, hope, faith, and love.
This makes me very proud to be one of the “We” and to be associated with a group of people who are all trying, and succeeding, to grow along spiritual lines.
I am grateful to announce the opening of RCOSA in Wimberley, Texas in mid-September and I hope we can carry this message to many more down in the beautiful Texas Hill Country.
May God continue to bless all of those we may help, we have helped, those who cannot or will not make it in to recovery, , and those who have and will support RCOSA.
With much Humility and Gratitude,
Steve G.

Thank You!
As I write this testimonial I am filled with gratitude and emotion. This week, after 11 months living at Step Ahead, I moved on to begin the next chapter of my life in sobriety. It is no exaggeration that I can say that Step Ahead saved my life. Prior to moving into Step Ahead, I could not stay sober and my life was in complete chaos due to my alcoholism. The troubles I had created, legal, family, mental, and financial, were overwhelming and I could not foresee anyway out. I was in a very dark and lonely place filled with fear, anger, and depression. That dark cloud began to lift immediately when I stepped through the doors of Step Ahead. With the help of my peers, Steve G, and my higher power, I was able to learn and embrace a new design for living a life of sobriety. In my time at Step Ahead, I was able to face and overcome my problems and fears by relying on the “we” part of the program and by using the tools of recovery that I learned and lived one day at a time at Step Ahead. Step Ahead not only saved my life, but gave me a new life where I have peace and happiness. I don’t know how to adequately express my gratitude for Step Ahead other than by doing what I can to give back this gift I was given to others who may still be struggling with alcoholism and addiction. Thank you Step Ahead for everything!

Good Morning Steve,
I asked about you this morning at the men’s prayer group. Look forward to seeing you again. I am thrilled to hear the reports of favor for your ministry. It does appear that the program will be well received in the community at large.
Look forward to your return to the group.
Sincerely in His blessings,

Hi Steve,
I want to thank you for trying to help my son. It’s up to him and finally I’ve used tough love and I’m scared shitless. Dead or in jail I know.
But here’s what I really want to thank you for. Indirectly when you were admitting my son to Step Ahead, something you said hit me so hard. It was about recovery and how not allowing anyone to get in the way. I went to Al-anon a few years back, but with working, my husband’s illness, and my son’s problems- well time passed. But I have been going now, and even when my son and I had words yesterday, I came home and thought I’m going to work on my recovery and he cannot stop me. Hope this made some sense to you, as I quoted you at our meeting tonight. I hope my other son and I can come down in the next two weeks so he can meet you. He has lived at home for most of this mess, and he doesn’t realize it has had an impact on him. God Bless and Thank you again.
